How Did You Get Involved With UNAVSA?I was first introduce to UNAVSA when I was the President of the Vietnamese Student Association of Minnesota. I would later become the President of UVSA-Midwest, further aligning with UNAVSA’s mission and goals. In 2008 I had an opportunity to attend the UNAVSA-5 Conference in Portland — I haven’t looked back since.

How Did You Get Involved WithUNAVSA?
I’ve long been involved in the Vietnamese community through the insistence of my parents. Gaining a genuine understanding for the needs of our community, I knew I needed to step up to give back to the community that raised and supported me. After attending UNAVSA 3 in San Jose, I was enamored by the organization’s mission to empower Vietnamese youth to lead and find worth in our beautiful former refugee community.

How Did You Get Involved WithUNAVSA?
In 2007 I went to my first ever UNAVSA conference in New Orleans. The theme was R (Recognize) I (Inspire) S (Strengthen) E (Empower) and it was so inspirational to see a city that has fallen so hard to be able to RISE again! I was intrigued by the organization at the time and that led me to be a little more involved with other Student orgs such as VASCON (Vietnamese American Student Conference). Then soon after in 2008, I got involved as the External Vice President for the Mid-Atlantic Union of VSAs (MAUVSA) for two terms and served as a Council of Regional Representative (CORR) at the time. In 2010, UNAVSA came to DC and I was urged to be the Sponsorship Director for the conference and I took on the challenge. After the experience in DC, I had a sudden urge to run for Eboard that year and the rest is history! It’s bittersweet to think that the term is over but we are so proud of how we’ve grown as an organization in the last two years. We hope to continue to grow in years to come by helping our partners become stronger and more sustainable!

How Did You Get Involved With UNAVSA?
I got involved with UNAVSA when the Midwest Region decided that we would place a bid to host the UNAVSA Conference in Minnesota. I always had a strong interest in the organization and the conference, but never really had the funding to go. Since we were putting in a bid to host the annual conference AND I finally had a job, I made it a priority to attend the conference and learn as much as I could. Although I have only been involved for about a year, I have had a ton of involvement while planning the upcoming Conference.
